Computer Science Fields of Study

Computer scientists design, implement, analyze, test, and evaluate all aspects of software systems. Computers are the tools of the future, and business, industry, and government depend more and more on innovative computer usage. Manipulating large masses of data, performing both routine and complex calculations, controlling industrial equipment, and communicating with users worldwide are just a few of today's computer tasks. Since computer scientists and other professionals constantly seek breakthroughs in software and hardware technology while exploring the horizon for new developments, computer science remains a discipline with a secure and excellent future.

Hardware Structures
Designing the hardware for computers, including such features as RAM, ROM, and I/O.

Information Systems
Designing networked computer systems and their hardware and software interfaces.

Microprocessors and Real Time Systems
Designing the hardware and software for the small computers "embedded" in larger systems. Such computers might be used in automobiles, clocks, VCRs, and robots.

Operating Systems
Study of computer operating systems, file and process management, distributed network and file systems.

Software Engineering
Designing, testing, evaluating, and maintaining large software systems.
